On Sunday, we drove over to Watsonville to pick strawberries at Gizdich Ranch. I hadn't been there since my mom and a few of her homeschooling cohorts dragged us kids over there to ride some silly wagon-thing around the property; it wasn't even berry- or apple-picking time when we went, so the extent of our activities included driving for an hour to get there, riding the silly wagon-thing, eating lunch, twiddling our thumbs, and driving for another hour to get back home. So exciting. (Part of me thinks that the "field trip" was more for the moms' enjoyment than anything else. Billy concurs.)
This time, we wanted to make sure that there was something more to do. Since strawberries are available May-July, it was the perfect time for picking! It was actually a last-minute decision; with the weather being so crappy here in SJ and our moods gradually turning sour being stuck at home, we packed up and got in the car, with no real plan as to what to do. We just had to get out of the house. As we pulled out of the garage, Judd suggested heading over to Gizdich, so that's what we did. When we got there, we spent about a half hour picking the reddest, juiciest strawberries (and eating half of them before we got back to the car).
Then we ate lunch and gave Gracelyn some time to play around in the sandbox and hay tunnel. Our opinion: While Gizdich Ranch may not be the most exciting place to spend your Sunday afternoon, it certainly does make for a relaxing and pleasant family outing. We're planning on going back in June when olallieberries and blackberries are ready for picking; anyone care to join us?
